Adidas has introduced the latest of its Futurecraft innovations: Futurecraft 4D, a high-performance running shoe with a middle sole that is made via the digital synthesis of light and oxygen. 

Digital light synthesis is a revolutionary process developed by Silicon Valley-based company Carbon, which uses digital light projection, an oxygen permeable appearance, and programmable liquid resins to build long-lasting high-performance products. 

The Futurecraft 4D’s middle sole is composed of different functional zones, which were created based on ergonomic/running data collected by Adidas over a time period of 17 years. In contrast to other production methods, the digital light synthesis allows Adidas to cater for an athlete’s demands in terms of movement, buffering, stability and comfort with a single element, the middle sole.

300 pairs of Futurecraft 4D shoes will be made this month, followed by more than 5,000 pairs for public retail in fall/winter this year. The offer is planned to be expanded for coming seasons.
