On May 9-10, 2018, Dhaka, in Bangladesh, will host the 8th edition of Bangladesh Denim Expo. The fair, while attracting international denim players of the global denim industry, will focus around the specific theme “Equality.” The choice of this theme aims to highlight what progress Bangladesh has made recently regarding equality in employees’ working conditions and treatment, though also in terms of economic and political aspects to persuade global brands, retailers, manufacturers, governments and development partners to establish a more equitable global apparel supply chain.
The fair aims to underline the importance of guaranteeing equal rights for workers and employers and ensure that both are treated with respect and can enjoy a good working relationship. It also wants to point out that all stakeholders in the apparel supply chain have to responsibly ensure safety in the workplace, sustainable work practices, environmental considerations and transparency. Equal opportunities for all–regardless of gender, religion or sexual orientation–should be guaranteed to all and individuals assessed on their capabilities. Moreover, gender equality–including equal pay, no gender discrimination, no sexual harassment and mutual respect–need to be satisfied.
“The Bangladesh Denim Expo has become a spot of regular get together of key denim stakeholders from across the world,” says Mostafiz Uddin, founder and CEO. "The visitors also exchange their views and discuss the importance of the themes. So, it would be not an exaggeration to say that the Bangladesh Denim Expo is successfully contributing to improving the working conditions by creating tangible awareness.”
