Gabor Footwear GmbH-owned company Snipe has unveiled its as of yet top secret Snipe 100 model, the first traditionally crafted, 100% compostable leather shoe. The revolutionary shoe was launched for the first time at the GDS fair with an elaborate marketing campaign and celebrity support from star chef Tim Mälzer.

The idea occurred to Snipe founder Ernesto Segarra after reading a study about global shoe waste, which is estimated to rise to 23 billion pairs by 2015. His aim was to develop a shoe that wouldn’t go to waste at the end of its life cycle and to raise consumer awareness concerning sustainable fashion.

The shoe has a biodegradable outer sole, cushioning, lining, laces, label, and cotton lining. The first model is now available for men and women, complete with special logo and packaging. For the upcoming spring/summer 2013 season, the collection will expand to two biodegradable models for women, one for men and a unisex option as well.
