The GDS shoe & accessories fair in Düsseldorf has started successfully. The atmosphere at the booths is relaxed and visitors are interested in new trends. Despite the strange situation in the shops – the summer season starting so late - retailers are looking for fashion. New colours such as brown and beige have made an appearance, and comfortable platforms and smart leather goods have had a good response. The most important items are summer boots with studs, metallic decorations and vintage details, flat sandals and new running style sneakers in different colors.

Most exhibitors are happy with the first day. Reiner Pfeiffer, Sioux: “The debut was successful. We will see how the fair continues.” Carsten Busche, Art Shoes: “Our collection has convinced the retailers. We have had a good response and we are on the right track.” But not everybody is happy and some exhibitors have complained of empty floors and space in some halls. For most exhibitors at GDS already 50 - 70% of orders have been placed. The new dates of GDS next summer from 30 July - 1 August are more than welcome. The new fair concept as a leading and international kick-off trade fair was a discussion topic.

Susana Fernandes, Clarks: “We are happy with the new dates. Finally the fair has found a solution and we can show new fashion items.” Many international visitors have missed the show in the past because of the late date. Michael Weyergans, Camel: “GDS is an important fair for us and we are happy with the new concept.” For the fashion orientated retailers the early date is necessary. Some 800 exhibitors are presenting the trends and looks for the 2014 Spring/Summer season until Friday 13 September. Last year about 860 brands were showing. The Design Attack area for young designers has the theme “Bahama Mama” and is hosting about 100 young designer brands.
