Designers and Agents launched today Green Market, its first significant sustainable trade event encompassing fashion, lifestyle, design and community. The show coincides with the Los Angeles spring market, which runs through Oct. 19.

Among the participants are Alabama Denim, Edun, Stewart & Brown, Camper, Loomstate and Namaste Green House. Criteria for applying includes proving that a minimum of 60% of one’s product line has been created through sustainable practices.

D&A has also opened the event up to wellness and beauty brands, eco-friendly businesses, community-based organizations and select new sustainable business models.

Co-founder/organizers Barbara Kramer and Ed Mandelbaum says they will expand the concept to run concurrently with D&A’s spring and fall markets. The company’s green programs, currently slated for May and June in New York and Los Angeles, remain in effect.

“In order to shrink fashion’s carbon footprint,” says Kramer, “you’ve got to give green design a bigger business presence. That positive footprint needs to be nurtured in order to grow. It has become apparent to us that we have created a platform for these emerging sustainable brands to meet the world of commerce in a supportive and expanding environment which is conducive to doing business and creating partnerships.”

A cocktail party will be held onsite tomorrow from 6:00 - 8:30 pm co-hosted by Ford Brady, celebrating the launch of Green Market and CocoEco, an online sustainable fashion magazine.
