Germany’s Adidas Adidas officially entered the table tennis market with its first official sponsorship and competition held at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin. The game with 4,500 spectators was part of the German Open 2010 for table tennis, which took place Mar. 18-21. It was the first time Adidas officially supplied table tennis athletes and the ITTF Pro Competition.

Adidas’ game was the final event of the German Open, with well known participants, including Carlo Thränhardt, the world record holder in high jump; female boxing champion Cecilia Braekhus; and German actors André Emanuel Kaminski and Tim Sander. Thirteen of the world’s top 20 ranked players in fact took part in the German Open.

The company’s engagement with tennis sports is no less of a strategic move on Adidas’ part. Table tennis is already highly popular with millions of active players in Asia. Adidas said it plans to offer eventually a whole table tennis assortment for professional and recreational players.
