After working as a stylist for around twenty years, mostly advising his clients about the latest hair trends, Jose Lücker decided to merge two of his passions together, when opening The Room in Barcelona: hair styling and fashion. As he says, a look needs not only a haircut but also an adequate outfit to be complete. Lücker shares with us some of his favorite labels, the role that denim plays at his store and inspiring shows and fashion spots. Interview by Lorenzo Molina

How did you end up opening a store?
I’ve been a stylist for around twenty years and my job consists mostly of advising my clients about the latest hair trends. At the same time, fashion has always been an interest and I particularly believe that a look needs not only a haircut but also an adequate outfit to be complete. It was this global approach to hairdressing and fashion the one that brought me to create a multispace comprising a clothing shop and a hair salon.

What are your current bestselling labels?
For years, Cheap Monday has positioned itself as one of our best-sellers because it offers attitude, design and quality garments at reasonable prices. In the footwear segment, Vans is clearly a classic that keeps on providing good numbers throughout the years.

Which are your personal favorite brands?
One of our favorite labels is Lacoste L!ve for its exclusivity, sports-heritage influence and impeccable French elegancy. Obey is also a brand that has reinvented itself season after season without losing its street-art influences and the ideals under which it was found. We love Clae’s footwear for its use of high-quality materials and the versatility of designs.

How important is the denim segment for your store? Which one is the most popular at the moment?
Denim occupies a prominent position in The Room, since it’s a never-out-of-fashion garments that innovates constantly. Every season, we choose the best fits, cuts and washes in order to offer our clients what they’re looking for. For us, the average-waist jeans with adjusted silhouette and skinny legs, remains the most popular. A style that works both for men and women, always made of cotton and spandex with simple washes ranging from light blue to indigo or unwashed denim.

Do customers search for favorite brands and special styles or do they buy spontaneously?
There have always been two different kinds of customers. The first one is the person who comes to The Room to look for a certain product or style because someone advised him/her to search here or also because some of our brands mention us on their websites as PoS. The second profile is our regular client, who knows our style and trusts our fashion advice. They don’t visit us looking for a specific garment, but always find clothes matching their styles.

Where do you order your products?
We usually attend the brand showrooms in Barcelona to place the orders. If a label doesn’t have a showroom here, then we just make a request using the lookbook and catalog that the company sends us over.

What inspires you, where do you get your information about upcoming trends?
Fashion trade shows like Bread & Butter, newsletters like Sneaker Freaker and Highsnobiety, fashion magazines such as Wad or ID... these are some of our inspiration sources.

Are there any new Brands which you have ordered for the first time now?
RVLT/Revolution is one of our new for this summer. The brand mixes streetwear with graphic design to create easy-to-wear products.

How do you stay in contact to your customers?
What would we do without social networks! Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and our website are the channels that bind us.

What do you like about your location and your customers?
We are at Barcelona’s city center, in the Gothic quartier, in a street where you can find the best streetwear and limited-edition assortment shops. We like to think of it as the small “Carnaby Street” of Barcelona, not only because of the audience that visits us but also for the kind of retailers that are established.

Are there any differences to similar stores in cities like Berlin, London or New York?
Yes, the main difference is that not many shops share its space with a hair-salon.

Do you have an online shop? Do you run any social media activities?
We have our own website and e-shop, as well as our social networks working on a 24/7 basis.

Is there a role model for your shop? Any store worldwide which inspires you?
Personally, we are fascinated by shops like Colette in Paris or Street Dover Market in London.
