All folks who started wearing the Adidas Stan Smith in early 2014 could barely forecast that the comeback of this silhouette would spark off a tennis revival in the sportswear field, which continued in 2015 thanks to the recovery of ‘70s retro tennis apparel. Classic athletic apparel also experienced a peak last year, as athleticwear brands like Champion and Fila celebrated their comeback with super cool, nostalgia-evoking retro collections.

So what comes next in 2016? Another sports discipline starts to appear on the horizon: Basketball! For Spring 2016, and probably due to the high success of its Nike Air sneaker on- and off-court, the Oregon-based sportswear giant releases a collection of apparel and sneakers, which commemorates the introduction of its Air-technology into a first basketball sneaker in 1982 and encompasses a range of basketball-inspired apparel like a short-sleeved hoodie ideal for the contemporary men’s layering look and a long-line jersey and curved hems, both products featuring old-school Nike Air logos, stars and other motifs referring to various basketball rules like the number of quarters in a game or the free-throw lines.

Also Japanese streetwear brand A Bathing Ape grasps the basketball-theme in the forthcoming spring/summer’16 collection, in form of the classical court equipment: basketball jersey and matching shorts that feature the label’s signature graphics. Another hint towards the impending relevancy of basketball in the sportswear scene is the return of Fila’s ‘90s sneakers The Cage, with its iconic cutouts on the collar, available in five colors: cream, navy, white, black and red.
