Once the Christmas holidays are over, the next round of trade shows and fashion weeks showcasing fall/winter 2016-17 proposals is about to start. Before it happens, we studied the main sources of inspiration, cuts, fits and embellishments that brands have adopted in their spring/summer’16 offerings –some of which will also sneak into the following season, indeed.

THE NEW ARRIVAL: DENIM JUMPSUITS
Jumpsuits will gain importance in the womenswear retail arena, as several brands such as G-Star, Closed and BLK DNM bet on them. Besides, the trend appears to have continuity for fall/winter 16-17.

THE AFFAIR WITH THE '70S DOESN'T COOL DOWN
It already took off in 2015, but the focus that designers and brands have put on the ‘70s won’t fade away in 2016, actually quite the opposite. Decade staples like flares, button-front skirts both mini and long, boho jumpsuits and wide-leg jeans in high-rise fits are called to become real mainstream, as female consumers get accustomed to a more voluminous silhouette. While bottoms gain on fabric, tops get tighter in most cases to make sure that outfit proportions are harmonious. High-rise fits will not vanish after summer, as images of brands like Closed bet decidedly on it.

BELOVED DETAIL: FRAYED EDGES
The imperfect, unfinished look that frayed edges put in denim gives the extra edge to relaxed summer outfits.

BACK TO CLASSICS: THE STRAIGHT FIT GAINS MOMENTUM
Taking the Levi’s 501 CT as key example of the new paradigm, the men’s offering will be updated with a more classic approach: straight fits in mid-blue washes, sometimes featuring tapered legs to make the transition from skinny jeans as smooth as possible. Cropped options with a wide-leg cut will slowly make their way to gents as well.

WHITE DENIM

Even though it will also be spotted in the ladies’ fashion assortment, there’s practically no men’s brand not carrying white denim next season. It is suitable for both the new take on nautical style and also for fresh total looks paired with sneakers.

FAVORITE TREATMENTS: DISTRESSING, PAINT SPLATTERS & EMBROIDERIES
From the huge rips in 2015, jeans will feature more subtle distressing treatments in 2016, sometimes even repaired to emphasize the vintage look. In addition, paint splatters accentuate the origins of denim as a workwear staple. Floral- and animal embroideries will also be present, both in men's and women's collections.
