The Spirit of Fashion, the fair for underground fashion that was scheduled to run Jul. 2–4 in Berlin, has been cancelled. Organizers will re-schedule the event to January 2010. The reason: insufficient numbers of exhibitors.

“Sadly the fire we stoked for the big hype in Berlin did not find the expected following. One reason was the current market situation. In spite of the prospective large numbers of visitors, the wholesale markets worry about too small order volumes. Furthermore, during the last two years many underground brands had adapted themselves to the fact that there was no adequate trade fair in the summer any more and focused their long-term strategy on being present at festivals,” spokesperson Joachim Scheffler announced.

The resurgence of fashion week in Berlin, nonetheless, was looked upon favourably, so even brands that withdrew for the summer have announced plans to exhibit in January.
