We may be days away from reporting the winners of this year’s Graduate Fashion Week showcase, June 6-10, in the UK, but thought to inform readers that for the first time in its history, GFW worked with a star photographer to promote 11 young design talents in a new campaign. Famed lensman Rankin shot 10 looks selected by Dazed and Confused stylist Katie Shillingford. As June Barker, Graduate Fashion Week Director, explained: “Having their work photographed by Rankin has been a dream come true for these 11 students and to have the support of one of the world’s leading photographers is a huge honor. Rankin’s involvement is a great endorsement for Graduate Fashion Week and speaks volumes about the industry’s support of the event and its place on the international fashion scene.” Students who made Shillingford's cut included Beth Spurr and Lucy Hammond, Kingston University; Rebecca Thomson, Manchester Metropolitan University; Lisa Marie Jones, University of Wales; Anna Lee, De Montfort University; Phoebe Thirlwall, Nottingham Trent University; Garry Butterfield, University of Northampton; Kitty Keay, Colchester School of Art; Sera Ulger, Ravensbourne College; Gina Webster, Birmingham City University; and Carly Ellis, University of Westminster. Said Rankin: “It was incredibly easy to shoot the clothes - each piece was so beautiful and full of character. I'm sure among the 2010 graduates we will see a designer that will catch the fashion world's imagination!” Currently underway, the annual GFW showcases designs from some 50 universities across 52 courses and approximately 22 fashion shows.
