Parsons, the esteemed New York City design school, is known for turning out some of the most influential American designers, including Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, New York’s “it boy” designer Alexander Wang and newcomer Cushnie & Ochs. So it came as no surprise that last night’s showcase of recent graduate collections at Début, a new multibrand store in SoHo, drew a crowd. On display were designs by Angela Gao, Ava Ghosseiri, Sylvia Kwan, Melissa Luning, Rachel Rymar, Sara Shahbazi, Wen Shi, Marie Christine Statz, Clara Yoo, Dmitry Sholokhov and, last but not least, this year’s designer of the year Stephanie Suberville. The graduate pieces will remain through the 28th, but fans of cutting-edge fashion can return to Début for equally fresh designs by other young designers, including Parsons alumni Angela Chen, Natalia Alcaron of Lialia, Nima Taherzadeh and Salvador Trinidad.
