The highly regarded American retailer Opening Ceremony has entered the Japanese market with Onward Holdings Co., Ltd. Open since last week, the 26,000-sq.-ft boutique-department store is located in the popular shopping district of Shibuya in central Tokyo.

Opening Ceremony, established in 2002 by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, already has two successful boutiques in New York and Los Angeles. The conceptual Tokyo store marks Lim and Leon’s ambitions to tap into the Asian market. “We do a lot of business in Asia and we are delighted to have the chance to open in Tokyo,” said Lim.

The store, which uses Americana as a central theme for each level, focuses mainly on American labels such as Band of Outsiders, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Nom de Guerre and Opening Ceremony’s eponymous brand. It also plays host to several celebrity lines including Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row.

The reception party was a star-studded event with a guest list including Hollywood stars Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman and Rinko Kikuchi, in addition to the Olsen sisters and supermodel Erin Wasson.
