German eyewear maker Mykita has been producing superb, handmade frames since 2003, beginning with its cutout stainless steel frames featuring snap-hinge technology and some equally chic acetate styles. And that its latest collaborations are with Romain Kremer and Bernhard Willhelm makes us want its designs even more. For fall Kremer designed the Yuri, named after the Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin and inspired by the idea of a sci-fi warrior. In red or black, the futuristic item looks more like a headpiece with little peepholes that recall traditional Inuit eyewear that cuts down the amount of sunrays getting into the eyes. Willhelm’s pieces, in contrast, are at once traditional and retro-futurist in their designs, ranging from a high-bridge, matte-finished aviator (the Alois), a close relation to the Franz and Sepp silhouettes, to a round, oversized frame in white with black lenses (the Janis), and sporty wraparounds with temples at the bottoms of the frames (the Lucidus). Mykita’s Franz, it should be noted, is the very style actress Sarah Jessica Parker sports in the “Sex and The City” sequel and can be seen on the current movie poster and trailer. With the movie opening on May 27, it’s probably wise to scoop up a pair or two at Bergdorf, Barneys or Net-A-Porter.com while you still can.
