Denim label Levi’s is going to unveil a selection of men and women garments featuring artwork by California illustrator Rick Griffin as part of its 2014 fall collection. Among products for men are T-shirts and sweaters bearing Griffin’s motifs. For women, the brand will sell T-shirts, a vest and a pair of shorts. The artwork combines tough and playful elements, from the design of an eyeball surfing a wave to a car full of surfboards.

Rick Griffin was born in 1944 in the beach community of Palos Verde (California). His work is closely linked to the blossoming skate and surf scene in SoCal, a counterculture that has crossed borders. Some of his artwork includes an album cover for The Grateful Dead, concert posters for “The Filmore” club in San Francisco and many other illustrations in magazines and underground comics. He died in 1991.

Levi’s designers chose the illustrations together with Griffin’s widow Ida Pfefferle. All the products will be available as starting in July in select Levi’s retail stores and from its online store.
