Last Saturday, May, 24, the investment group Hammerson opened its newest shopping center, hosting a two-day opening ceremony in France. Les Terrasses du Port in Marseille is a prestigious project for the Franco-Anglican group, which already owns eight other shopping malls in France.

The facts of this mega project are impressive: Three years of construction period, 61,000 square meters, 2,600 parking spots, four floors, 190 boutiques and restaurants and a sea front which is 260m long, featuring an extraordinary panoramic view over the Mediterranean Sea with a terrace of 4,000 square meters. The mall will be open seven days a week and is connected to the public transport system. According to extrapolations the center should attract 15 million visitors a year and generate a turnover of 350 million Euros. The project has a total investment of 466 million Euros, creating 3,000 new workplaces. Brands like the department store Le Printemps and its streetwear affiliates Citadium, Uniqlo, H&M, Zara, Sandro, Maje, American Vintage, Michael Kors along with jeans labels like Kaporal 5, G-Star, Guess and Levi’s count to the leaseholders of the new shopping destination.

The big center was designed by Saguez&Partners in Paris, a renowned agency and expert for shopping malls. The design was inspired by imagery of destinations in Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean with two design highlights in form of an increasing architectural structure rising from the sea to the sky and a 40m high central atrium, which is said to be the highest in Europe.

The new building is situated in the new heart of Marseille at the Grand Port Maritime, between the new constructed Boulevard du Littoral and the business center Les Docks. This area of the second biggest city in France is part of the vast renovation operations and urban development project, the Euroméditerranée, which was launched in 1989.

Jean-Phillippe Mouton, President of Hammerson France: „This project participates in the redesign of Marseille as a trend destination. Les Terrasses du Port will be the new meeting point for the inhabitants of Marseille and reflect the enthusiasm, which is developing in the metropolis. “

The new district, which has been build up in the last ten years, will be transferring the shopping area of the city from the famous old harbor and its well-known streets La Canebière and Rue Saint Ferreol to this new harbor center for cruise liners. Les Terrasses du Port is situated in the middle of this new area and next to the new museums MuCEM (Museum of the European and Mediterranean Populations) and Le Silo, two important tourist destinations, along with the new commercial strip Boulevard du Litoral.
