Supima’s second annual design competition and fashion show for emerging designers took place last night at Gotham Hall in New York City, with Kimenna taking top honors for a halterneck jersey dress in white with cutwork floral appliqués and ruffles and a cap-sleeve cocktail dress in Central denim. Other designers noted for their execution and eveningwear designs in the categories of knits, denim, chambray and shirting included Victor de Souza, Nikki DeMoneris, Yod Yoko, Andrew Dyrdahl, Karen Sabag, Yin Ting Huang and Nicole Jiminez. Sportswear International’s own Tim Yap served as one of 11 judges that included Jocelyn Yap, President of Issey Miyake USA; Glen Hoffs, Men’s Design Director at Brooks Brothers; David Leung, Design Professor at Parsons School of Design; and Hitha Prabhakar, Fashion Editor for Fox News. The Supima Competition for Emerging Designers began with an open call in late November 2008. Following the open call, 21 finalists were asked to produce two eveningwear looks from 20 yards of donated Supima cotton. Buxton Midyette, VP of Marketing, has previously cited the legendary Wool Secretariat competition, which launched the careers of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, as the key inspiration for the event.
