Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Los Angeles ( wrapped up its Autumn/Winter 08-09 season last week, having held the fort with a steady mix of West Coast designers, as well as those from further afar.

Those showing included IMASU by Kelly Nishimoto, Orthodox, British designer Julia Clancey, Whitley Kros (one half of whom happens to be married to singer Beck), Alexis Lamontagna, Jenny Han, Elmer Ave, Samora, Farah Angsana and Monarchy Collection plus many more red carpet designers.

The usual hoorah hay ensued across Los Angeles as the fashion events took place, with varying ranks of celebrity descending upon the Smashbox Studios location (anyone from P.Diddy and Juliette Lewis to Gene Simmons and a Ms Paris Hilton).

The collections themselves are perhaps in a different league from those shown by distinguished participants of the more time-honored fashion weeks across the industry, and perhaps by default incomparable. That said, decent pieces were presented by the duo behind Whitley Kros (more NYC than LA with it’s grungy tartan fabrics and cool, wide slacks), menswear label Orthodox, whose neutral palette of men’s and women’s clothing delivered a welcome maturity, and Monarchy Collection’s notable step into more directional design.
