The 30 finalists of the second international fashion competition createurope: The Fashion Design Award 2009 were announced last Saturday in Berlin.

More than 1,000 participants from 59 European countries applied and sent in their collection concepts to the international fashion competition in 2009.

The choice of the finalists and the significance of the competition were discussed by a number of journalists and speakers, among them Dirk Bonn, artist, creative designer and member of this year’s panel; Dr. Michael Jeismann, Director of the Goethe Institute Head Office; and Cem Cako, one of the finalists of the previous year.

At the final show on October 23, 2009 winners of the four categories – Best Upcoming Designer, Best Student, Best Avant-garde and Audience – will be chosen by a second jury of prominent figures from the fashion world, including Joop! Creative Director Dirk Schönberger; the designers at A.F. Vandevorst; Rebekka Bay, Creative Director and Head Designer at COS; and Chris Deacon, Curator and Director of the "Haus der Kunst" in Munich.

British artist Tony Cragg created the trophy which will be handed out to winners.

This year, for the first time, young people from the Middle East and North Africa were invited to participate in createurope. By increasing the geographical span of the entries, organizers are aiming to encourage a creative exchange not only within Europe but also across its borders, and to develop lasting contact between young designers and their international counterparts.

The competition createurope: The Fashion Design Award was founded at the beginning of 2008 as a Goethe Institute initiative and a project of Eunic, the Association of European Cultural Institutes in Berlin, with Quelle GmbH as its primary sponsor.
