Compass, the two-day directional shoe show produced by the founders of (capsule), will make its New York City debut this Monday, Feb. 1 at the Puck Building in SoHo. With WSA and FFANY showing the same time this season, retailers to brands and editors have had to make difficult choices. Compass organizers asked retailers where they preferred to go to market and the response was New York; subsequently organizers agreed to move the show to Manhattan after three seasons of going head to head with WSA. Sixty-five brands are on the schedule this season, including heritage brands such Cole Rood & Haan, Mark McNairy for Bass, and Chippewa and boot specialists Doc Martens, Red Wing, Palladium and Timberland. Women’s lines will include B Store, Opening Ceremony, Coclico, Esska and 80%20. Organizers also partnered with jewelry sculptor Gabriel Urist to create a limited edition loafer pendant to be given to all Compass exhibitors and attendees. Next up for the trade show mavericks: an expanded version of (capsule) in Las Vegas at the Venetian featuring close to 200 brands and their first women’s only edition of (capsule) at the Angel Orensanz Center in New York City from Feb. 22-23.
