Billabong International has acquired Sector 9, the designer, marketer and manufacturer of skate longboards in Southern California. “Sector 9’s products, primarily its longboards really differentiate it from other brands in the board sports channel and have appeal to surfers, skateboarders and the broader youth market,” said Derek O’Neill, CEO of Billabong of the newly acquired brand. “The company has not only proved the viability of the longboard segment; it has experienced sustained growth over the past decade and has become synonymous with the California board sport lifestyle.”

O’Neill has retained Sector 9 co-founders and owners Steve Lake, Dennis Telfer and Dave Klimkiewicz. The purchase of Sector 9 includes its Gullwing skateboard trucks brand. Sector 9 operates a vertical business in San Diego and could do approximately 2% of Billabong International’s sales in the 2008-09 fiscal year.
