Bread & Butter Barcelona, now the leading trade show for sportswear, jeanswear and trends in Europe, finished its second edition on a high note. The show, which took place once again in the Fira Barcelona from January 18 to 20, posted a three-day attendance of 49,000 visitors, up by 3,000 compared to the premiere in July 2005.

780 brands showed their collections in seven areas including Milk & Honey, Superior and Sportswear. The Denim Hall, with exhibitors ranging from Mustang and Pepe Jeans to G-Star and Levi’s, received the highest number of visitors.

The majority of guests again belonged to Southern Europe: 37% came from Spain/Portugal, 19% from Italy.

Both exhibitors and retailers seemed to be satisfied with the show and are said to be returning in July. As a result, Karl-Heinz Müller, Bread & Butter president, has said that the contract with Fira Barcelona will be extended for an unlimited period of time.

Müller also announced the new dates for the summer editions of Bread & Butter. To avoid an overlap with the international shows in Paris and Florence, as well as the regional fairs in Germany, Barcelona will take place from July 5-7 and Berlin from July 14-16.

In addition, he unveiled his newest plans for the future of the Spanish-based trade show. He is planning to help launch a Barcelona Fashion Week, with the support of Fira Barcelona Ltda, B&B Barcelona's grounds owner, and the City of Barcelona represented by its Mayor Joan Clos.

"We could easily use the three days from Friday to Sunday and make it a six-day event in Barcelona altogether," Müller said.

Barcelona Fashion Week may be launched as early as this summer to coincide with the next edition of Bread & Butter Barcelona. Plans may include extending the venue's existing space to include the two upper halls on the land marked Montjuic to host "catwalk shows, different from everything, which you know right now", the B&B president explained.

Müller intends to showcase innovative brands rather than international established designers, but added: "We will give upcoming young designers the chance to find their audience and international recognition here."

He is also planning to launch kidswear at the summer edition of B&B Barcelona. The section will be titled "veryKids" and will be added to the upper halls of the venue. The "veryKids" section of the show will make its worldwide debut at the Berlin version of Bread & Butter, which takes place this week from January 27-29 in the German capital.
