Why did you open your store? Tell us the story behind!
Local was founded by Simon Freund (Simon&Me) and Philipp Sumpf and started as a self-initiated project in October 2014 to curate a selection of some of the finest high-quality products from around the world. As a conceptual and independent store, Local remains unique in its culture and identity. Its purpose is to support and showcase like-minded brands that share our ideas of craftsmanship, quality and aesthetic vision: We believe in the value of locally manufactured goods. Therefore Local exclusively offers products that have been produced in the country of the brand’s origin. This way, we make sure to only offer authentic goods that are crafted with passion, meticulous attention to detail, and respect to humanity and our natural resources. Appreciative of timeless design that transcends seasonal trends as well as clean, high-quality products, Local offers a hand-picked selection of brands and products, ranging from menswear clothing to homewear-, grooming-, interior-, and lifestyle goods. With the aim to always find the best product of its kind, we introduce you to brands and products that are here to stay, many of which are sourced from the US, Japan, Germany and the rest of Europe. Great design is even better with a unique level of service; therefore, everyone who enters our store is given the time he needs to find just the right product. And we are always open to share the original stories of our individual brands and products with you.

What are your current bestselling labels? Which are your personal favorite brands?
Our best selling label is our in-house label Simon&Me. Our/Berlin Vodka, Binchotan and Mast Brothers Chocolate also sell really well. For our favourite brands we have to mention Simon&Me again as well as Noble Denim and Haeckels who focuses on all natural care products. A Kind of Guise would be up there as well, as we follow a lot of the same ideas.

How important is the denim segment for your store?
Even though we currently have a high focus on lifestyle products, denim is also really important to us. The perfect denim is one of the main parts of every outfit and therefore a must in our store.

In terms of denims: Which cuts / shapes / washings / colors are most popular at the moment?
We strive to only sell the best product of its category and therefore only sell one brand/style of denim. We currently offer the Noble Denim Earnest Slim Straight, which is made and sourced 100% in the USA. This model is made from only the best Cone Mills white Oak selvedge denim and comes raw. It’s only soaked in indigo and not washed. Therefore the denim will perfectly age and mould to the owner over the years of wear.

Do customers search for favorite brands and special styles or do they buy spontaneously?
Pretty much all our customers come by for a specific product, like the vodka, and end up buying some other products spontaneously.

Where do you order your products?
We order our products directly from the brand or its distributor.

What inspires you, where do you get your information about upcoming trends?
We don’t really search for trends as we strive to offer products free of seasonal trends. Beautiful minimalistic design and high quality craftsmanship inspire us. We really like the idea of heritage products but search for a more modern attitude for our offerings. Are there any new brands, which you have ordered for the first time now? Hudson Made and Haeckels are new to us and we are waiting for a delivery of Vor-Produkte who have just started a line of made in Germany footwear.

What do you think will be the key-pieces/trends in summer 2015?
For us Vor Shoes and the Simon&Me 002 The Basic T-Shirt will be major pieces of the upcoming summer. With popular tea movement over the last years we believe that cold brew tea will also be a major refreshment for the upcoming season.

How do you stay in contact with your (regular) customers?
We have a newsletter that is especially for our regulars and informs them about new products and restocks first hand. We also never have a sale on our prices as we offer all products for a fair price. For our regulars we offer small discounts on special occasions like Valentine’s Day or Black Friday. What do you like about your location and your customers? We are located in the midst of the Bergmannkiez in Kreuzberg, Berlin. It’s a very upcoming area with lots of nice cafes and restaurants. The house here is beautiful and offers an all around great atmosphere. Our store is located off the main street and therefore only people who are looking for a specific product come down. Our costumers share our passion for simple design and sustainable production.

Are there any differences to similar stores in cities like London or New York?
There are some shops that offer very similar products and that could be compared to us but Local and its concept stands out among others. As mentioned before, we only sell products that are made in the country of the brand’s origin and are free from seasonal trends.

Do you have an online shop? Do you run any social media activities?
All our products are available in-store and online at www.local-store.co . We also run social media activities on the usual platforms via @localstoreco and #localstoreco.

Is there a role model for your shop? Any store – worldwide – which inspires you?
There is no specific role model to Local but of course shops in the likes of Voo, ood Hood and Need Supply Co are always interesting for us.
