This week it was announced that online retailer Zalando plans to build another 110,000 sqm logistics center in Mönchengladbach, Germany and will once again team up with the Goodman real estate investment company as they did with their first center in Erfurt. The Berlin-based e-commerce company plans to employ approximately 1,000 staff members within the new logistics grounds and wants to further strengthen its sales activities in major western European markets. In the future, all European marketplaces shall be supplied and served by the logistic grounds in Mönchengladbach and Erfurt. Zalando currently operates in 14 different European markets and recently launched online shops in Poland and Norway.

David Schröder, manager of the MyBrands Zalando eLogistics GmbH, explained: “Zalando is tracing a successful growth pattern internationally. We and our investors are convinced that logistics prove to be one of our core competences.” According to Schröder, the decision to base the new center in Mönchengladbach’s Regiopark was based on a mutually respectful collaboration with the city and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as on Mönchengladbach’s central position within the metropolitan area.

In addition to the enlargement of their logistics facilities, Zalando has also announced new plans and changes to their assortment sector. For the start of the fall season, the online shop has distinctly broadened its men’s segment. On the one hand, Zalando has added a number of new brands to its menswear portfolio such as Floris van Bommel, Superdry, Common People, Gsus sindustries or KG by Kurt Geiger. On the other hand, the retailer has upgraded its private brand Zalando Collection by a men’s line containing shoes, classic shirts, t-shirts, jackets and bag. The 90 styles of the collection were designed by Zalando’s own design team in Berlin. Prices range between €29.95 for a t-shirt and €249.95 for a leather jacket.

“The launch of the men’s line is another important step in the expansion of the Zalando Collection. The women’s line, which was launched in spring 2012, has been received very well by our female customers. As a result of this, we tripled the size of the collection for the Fall/Winter season from 250 to 800 styles”, said David Schneider, founder and manager of Zalando GmbH.

To further address their male customers, Zalando has also launched its own men’s magazine which advises its readers with styling tips. The 68-page first edition of Zalando Men was published on 21st September with a print run of 250,000 issues.
