Weekday x Saint Martins
01 Feb. 2012
WEEKDAY COLLABORATES WITH CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS GRADSFashion brand Weekday announced its latest collaboration with two talented graduates from the world renowned Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Rejina Pyo and William Hendry presented collections that gained wide acclaim from the fashion community at the 2011 graduate show: Weekday was equally impressed and invited them to collaborate.
Pyo, originally from Seoul, is also the winner of the prestigious Han Nefkens Fashion Award 2012. She has created an effortless and unrestricted collection for Weekday with a timeless style inspired by modern art. “Simple abstract shapes and blocks of colours inspire the collection. I am passionate about modern art and sculptures, so I took inspiration from some of my favourite artworks. One of the defining points of my collection, for example, are the primitive aesthetics and block colours of paintings by Ellsworth Kelly from the 1950s,” said Pyo.
Hendry's capsule for Weekday is, on the other hand, a masculine reinterpretation of his 2011 womenswear graduate collection. The aesthetic expression is directly linked to the garment's function with a focus on cut, fabrication and usage. Like Pyo, he was also inspired by various artists including Martin Creed and Rachel Whiteread, as well as by Aldous Huxley's classic novel Brave New World.“My design process is mostly about reduction. All superfluous elements are removed to create a garment that consists of its essential components. This highlights details such as seam placement, neckline shape and silhouette. I always think a lot more of what I can remove than of what I can add,” Hendry commented.
The new Weekday collaboration collections will be in Weekday stores beginning in April 2012.
