MARK WARNER, STYLE LAB FOR MEN, NEW ORLEANS
Style Lab has been a fixture for men’s fashion on New Orleans’ trendy Magazine Street for more than seven years and has been featured in GQ Magazine’s Top 100 Men’s Boutiques List for several years running. In 2011, Mark Warner, a veteran of the entertainment world, became the shop’s new owner. He recently hosted a store relaunch party and says that his establishment’s pool table and open bar are meant to reflect the spirit of casualness that shoppers can see in the shop’s merchandise. Here, he discusses bestsellers and local style in The Big Easy. By Christopher Blomquist
“John Varvatos, Diesel, Penguin and Ben Sherman have been mainstays on the top seller list at Style Lab. The store recently added underwear and increased its selection of accessories. Jewelry pieces by Renu, which is designed and made in Louisiana, are extremely popular.
While the store has the support of a great customer base, recently it has seen a lot of tourist traffic. With New Orleans on the up-and-up, the percentage of tourists shopping the store has increased. These customers are looking for novelty items of clothing and accessories, while the local customers look for brands and items normally found in large department stores, which are not available in New Orleans.
Diesel Jeans in the Viker, Safado and Krooley fits have been very strong [sellers of late]. J Brand and Nudie Jeans are two brands recently added to the store that are set to perform well.
New Orleans is the exception to Louisiana. The NOLA man sports a diverse look, just as diverse as the culture of the city. Tourists enjoy name brand threads and locals wear looks that span artistic in concept to a current version of the traditional, southern “seeksucker and bowtie” look. Style Lab will be introducing shoes to its presentation for spring 2011. In NYC Walk-Over shoes by Geo E. Keith and Vintage Shoe Company caught our eye. For fashion, we enjoyed Buckler, Ted Baker, Plectrum and John Varvatos.”
